THE SCOTCHMAN & HIS PACK

The Name of this pub, unlike some other hostelries, has not changed for 150 years.

It dates back to the mid 19th century, and contray to popular speculation, has nothing to do with Scotland, or Scotch Whiskey.

In the times before motor transport, heavy goods used to be delivered by horse and cart.

In hilly areas such as Bristol, a wedge of wood would be placed under the wheels of the cart when it stopped to make a delivery, in order to prevent it rolling backwards.

A person was hired to follow the carts carrying a bag of wedgies on his back.

The pieces of wood were called Scotches;

The person was called a Scotchman;

The bag of scotches that he carried was called his pack.
